How To Prepare For Your Banff Whitewater Rafting Adventure

Ready to grab your paddle and tackle the Kicking Horse River? If you’re one of the many outdoor enthusiasts drawn to Banff and the Rocky Mountains and can’t wait to embark on your next adventure, Hydra River Guides is here to help! For over 30 years, we’ve guided rafters of all ages and experience levels down these infamous waters, with plenty of smiles and laughs along the way. Below are a few answers to some of our most frequently asked questions to help you get ready for your day on the river!

Do I Need To Have Experience?

Not at all! While Hydra is always happy to welcome experienced rafters, there’s nothing we love more than introducing first time paddlers to our incredible backyard. Rest assured, we’ll make sure you’re ready to go.

Is Rafting Family Friendly?

Yes, provided your children are at least 6 years old and a minimum of 50lbs for our Mild Trip and 12 years old and 90lbs for all other trips.

What Do I Need To Bring With Me?

Keep in mind that space on your raft is quite limited, so it’s best to plan to leave many of your items behind. Bring a bathing suit, towel and a bag for your personal belongings; we’ll provide the other essentials like wetsuits, booties, fleece sweaters, life jackets, and more!

Will I Fall In?

Even with our exceptional guides at the helm, rafting is an adventurous activity, and you may fall in. To minimize the risk of going overboard, be sure to listen closely to your guide’s instructions and follow them precisely. For additional safety measures, we recommend that all rafters have a basic swimming ability should it be needed.

How Many People Per Raft? Can You Accommodate Groups?

Rafts typically include 8 rafters, plus a guide. We do our best to place all group members together, however parties larger than 8 will be split between multiple boats.
