The Kicking Horse River is a world-renowned hotspot for guests looking to experience the best rafting, wildlife, and views that the Rockies have to offer.
At Hydra, we love showing people around our backyard whether they come from near or far. Parks Canada is celebrating our nation’s 150th anniversary, and we’d like to extend a special invitation to our fellow Albertans to the North and South. Located just 5 hours from Edmonton, and 2.5 hours from Calgary, a day on the Kicking Horse is the perfect mini-trip that’s sure to leave you re-energized! A quick day or two away can be cheaper than most other vacations, and still provide the ultimate 'pick me up'. Think you can’t pack adventure into a condensed period? Here are a few of our top tips to making the most of your short time away!
Step one: Don’t forget to prep
We all know that some of the best vacations are a spur of the moment decision that launches a legendary road trip. While we’re all about spontaneity, when it comes to rafting, there’s a little more forethought that needs to be put in before you show up. By doing your homework and finding out the essentials of your river retreat, you’ll not only set yourself up for success but reduce stress levels all around (that’s part of why you’re looking to get away, right?). Check out our FAQs to find answers to some questions you may have. If you have any follow-up queries, don’t hesitate to contact us!
Step two: Consider your group and what your style of adventure is while selecting a trip
Hydra River Guides is proud to offer a variety of rafting trips and packages suited to all experience levels and thrill seekers. That said, it’s always best to consider the specific needs of your crew before booking. For example, if you’re planning to bring children along, our Mild Trip is the perfect fit for most families. Our Kicking Horse Classic is a crowd favourite, but for those looking for even more adventure, we offer a Double Whitewater trip called The Ultimate. For those looking to get a real adrenaline kick, pair your rafting adventure with some skydiving. Or, for those looking to relax, join us on horseback for a BBQ dinner. Wanting to book for a stag or stagette? We’ve got you covered. Whether you’re looking to bring the whole crew along (check out our group options!) or venture solo, Hydra River Guides has an adventure fit for everyone!
Step three: Come prepared and maximize your fun
Now that you’ve done your homework and found the trip that works best for you, the most important step is showing up prepared. If you’ve read our FAQ, you’ll know to bring your bathing suit, towel (you’ll want one to warm up after!) and a bag for your personal belongings. We’ll provide all the river gear to make sure you’ll be safe and warm, but it’s important that you remember the essentials. Also important: don’t forget to be on time! All of our trips leave at specific times; to ensure you don’t miss your ride on the river, leave extra time to account for traffic (occasionally of the wildlife variety…elk have a mind of their own!) and any other obstacles that may cause a delay. Once you’re here, you can rest assured that you’re in the best hands, and your trip is sure to leave you with lifelong memories.
If you’re in need of a vacation and a chance to reconnect with nature in a way like never before, give Hydra River Guides a call today, and we’ll set you up with the right combination of fun and relaxation. There’s no better time to enjoy Canada’s natural beauty, and as always, we’d be honoured to be your guides!
